Safe access to the community

Picture yourself driving on an unpaved, sandy road, with rocks on one side and a deadly ravine on the other, with no space to cross a car coming from the opposite direction. Now add thick fog, preventing you from seeing more than a few meters in front of you. That is the reality many communities located in remote areas up in the hills around Lima are facing during the fog season from mid-April to October. Every year, accidents happen, often with casualties…

During our discussions with the leaders of one of these communities, they defined widening this access road as one of their most critical priorities with an immediate impact on the well-being of the children and their families. They had been reaching out in vain to official instances and were now asking for our help.

We agreed on the importance of the project and secured the budget for renting heavy machinery to break and evacuate the rocks to create two safe crossing points along the road. The work was executed by the people of the community, supervised by a volunteer engineer, during several weekends, just in time for the next fog season. By using their claxons to make themselves heard, families can now access their community much more safely during the fog season!
